Agri Food Application Stage Delayed
Although the pilot program was expected to be opened for the applications in April, the Government of Canada postpones the Agri-Food Immigration Pilot as part of steps to curb the spread of the coronavirus pandemic.
According to the government, the program is going to be launched in May.
The government keeps implementing all measures in order to fight the spread of COVID-19. This also resulted in the Agri-Food Pilot being delayed until May.
The application window for the interested candidates will be accessible from May 15, 2020, to May 14, 2023. During this period of time, applicants can submit their applications.
Although the Government of Canada has recently announced that it had shut all borders to non-essential travel, the entry for foreign workers to the country will be continued, states IRCC.
What is Agri Foot Pilot?
The pilot is expected to help many vacant positions in the meat processing, mushroom and as well as another agricultural sector to be filled by foreign workers which, in turn, will keep Canada’s crop production and livestock raising industries to grow.
Previously, Canada used to offer a short-term, temporary, work permits for skilled foreign workers in this industry. With the help of this pilot, however, agricultural workers, who have Canadian work experience and a valid job offer from a Canadian employer, will be able to apply for permanent residence.
Usually, the main source of foreign workers moving to Canada during the spring season in Mexico and the Caribbean. Besides, the province of Quebec, which invites foreign agricultural workers annually, employs more than 16,000 foreign workers each year.
Canada, in general, has more than 140,000 workers, in the whole country, coming from foreign countries that support the development of the country’s economy.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Canadian farmers have concerned whether it would result in all border to be closed. The lack of foreign workers to support the industry, in turn, would make the whole season to get affected.
Therefore, the government decided to allow the entrance of foreign workers to the country, recognizing its importance to the economy. The measures were taken by the federal government which enabled foreign labor to enter Canada.
