Canadian Government continues to attract more International Students
The Government of Canada needs a growing number of international students in order to meet the demands of its labor market needs. The Government has done many improvements in its international student’s area in the last years. However, according to the study conducted recently, there are several steps that the Canadian Government can take in order to further improve Canada’s aim of bringing and retaining international students.
In the last years, there has been a significant increase in the number of students choosing Canada for their studies. Compared to the previous year there was a 20% increase in enrollment in Canadian institutions in 2018. Among many other benefits such as affordable tuition and the quality of education, students prefer Canadian schools as their destination for their studies for also their being the world’s most employable institutions.
According to the research carried out by Century Initiative, only a fraction of current international students is going to stay in Canada following their studies in order to apply their acquired abilities and efforts into the Canadian workforce. Although the country is going to accept the highest number of international students in 2019 until now, Canada’s main goal should also be to focus on retaining students in the country after their education.
In fact, there have been many positive steps taken by the Canadian Federal Government recently in order to increase the number of study permit applications. In 2018, the Study Direct Stream (SDS) was launched which addresses a number of Asian countries simplifying study permit applications for several countries.
This year, in addition, the coverage of the program has been expanded which now includes Pakistan, Morocco, and Senegal. The study suggests that these kinds of programs help to further target international students wishing to study in Canada from more diverse countries.
Additionally, the recent initiative declared by the Canadian Government shows that the International Education Strategy is going to allocate $29 million in order to support the current education field and as well as a labor force. The plan has been set to cover 5 years of the period while simplifying the study permit application process for foreign students and planning to encourage them to opt for Canadian schools outside of the country’s main cities.
The study suggests post-secondary schools in smaller centers to encourage international students to remain and get employed in the area by offering more incentives. Among other suggestions, the study shows that the establishment of core informational portals would further help future international graduates to better inform them about their options for permanent immigration after their studies. Furthermore, this will also help to create links between students and potential areas of strong labor market demand.
What are your options for immigration after graduation?
As an international student, you can choose Canada by submitting an application for a Post Graduation Work Permit after your studies. PGWP enables international graduates to live and work anywhere in Canada for three years of period. As you gain valuable Canadian work experience, you will have an excellent option to become a permanent resident of Canada through applying available immigration programs such as the Canadian Experience Class which is handled by the Express Entry system.
