What is an eTA?
An Electronic Travel Authorization or (eTA) is a new requirement set by the Government of Canada for foreign travelers who travel to or pass through Canada without a visa.
If you have a Canadian visa, permanent residence in Canada or Canadian citizenship, then you do not need it as a travel document for entry into Canada.
Who needs an eta for Canada?
If you are a traveler from a country that does not require a visa to visit Canada (IMM5257), then you need to get an ETA, and only if you are traveling to Canada by air. When you are from a country that is visa-exempt and enters Canada by land, you do not need it.
Do you need an eta for Canada?
Answer basic questions to find out whether you need a travel document for eTA Canada:
- Do you from a visa-exempt country?
- Are you traveling to or through Canada by air?
You will need an eTA to board your flight to Canada if you answered both questions yes.
STUDENTS AND WORKERS:
Candidates from a visa-exempt country who have been given a study permit or work permit will be issued an eTA automatically when IRCC approves their application for a study or work permit.
Nevertheless, those who are from a visa-free country and have obtained their permit before 1 August 2015 may need to apply for it if they plan to leave and come to Canada by air.
Do Americans need eta?
U.S. citizens are not required to travel to Canada by a visa. As usual, you can enter Canada with your current U.S. passport, if you are a U.S. citizen.
If you are a permanent resident of the United States (Green Card holder), you must have it and a Green Card to travel to Canada.
You do not need an eTA to enter Canada if you are a dual citizen, meaning you have Canadian citizenship (cit 0002) and minimum one other citizenship. However, should you arrive in Canada by air you need to arrive with a Canadian passport?
Permanent residents of Canada are not required to have it. For traveling to Canada all you need is to have a valid PR Card or Permanent Resident Travel Document.
Apply for eTA Canada
The great news, if you need it, is that it’s a very simple document to apply for.
You can simply start your application on the Government of Canada website and you will only need to pay CAD 7.00 as an application fee. It only takes a few minutes to complete the application, and your eTA will be valid for 5 years once approved.
Because it is an electronic document, it is linked to your passport number electronically. No physical documents are provided by the Government of Canada as an eTA.
