This form must be filled out, answered and signed by both the sponsor and the principal applicant. This application package can be used by applicants who want to become a sponsor. However, in order to be eligible for using this form, you must be either a Canadian citizen, permanent resident. Also, it is necessary to be 18 years of age or older to be qualified as a sponsor for the following persons:
- your spouse or common-law partner who lives with you in Canada, and their dependent children
- your spouse, common-law partner or conjugal partner who lives overseas, and their dependent children
- your dependent children
You can use IMM5533 to prepare applications for both:
- an application to become a sponsor for your spouse, partner or dependent child
- a permanent resident application for your spouse, partner or dependent child as well.
You may also want to know that, your spouse or partner can become eligible to apply for an Open Work Permit if you submit an application under the Spouse or Common-law Partner in Canada class. If you want to find more information about working and studying for spouses and partners, then you can follow this link to get detailed instructions.
Please note that you do not need to use this guide if you are planning to sponsor an adopted child, or orphaned family member as well. Also, according to IRCC (former CIC), you should not use the guide for other family members who are not your spouse, partner or dependent child.
However, you can sponsor your other family members other than your spouse, common-law partner, conjugal partner, or dependent child. In this case, you need to apply to the sponsorship package for adopted children and other relatives instead.
Another valuable information about using the IMM5532 is that sponsors and sponsored spouses and partners can voluntarily provide consent for IRCC. They may choose IRCC to release any information obtained in connection with an investigation of marriage fraud to their spouse or partner.
However, according to the Canadian Government, officers should not come to negative conclusions from the decision of a sponsor not to sign the mentioned consent form.
