More healthcare workers are needed to fight COVID-19
Health workers, who are continuously fighting to stop the spread of coronavirus pandemic, are at risk while trying to stay safe. Canadian doctors and nurses, being on the front lines, are facing high risk, while struggling with the current global health crisis.
Canada now needs to welcome eligible foreign national health workers to the country more than ever to support the healthcare system.
The recent global coronavirus pandemic will seem to cause Canada to experience a shortage of available doctors in the near future with the current decline in protective gear and stressful conditions across all hospitals throughout the country.
According to the statistics as of now, unfortunately, healthcare professionals account for 10 percent of all COVID-19 cases known in the province of Ontario, and it is expected that the number will grow in a very short period of time.
HealthForceOntario relieved that, nearly 13,000 foreign-educated doctors and 6,000 foreign-educated nurses in Ontario were not employed in their fields of study.
The government of Ontario, in turn, is well aware of the situation and therefore enables internationally-trained health workers to come to Canada through submitting an application for a supervised one-month medical license in order to fight COVID-19 pandemic.
Obtaining this short-term license, healthcare professionals, who have an international experience, will be able to practice under the guidance at Canadian public hospitals
Requirements for the candidates who want to apply for a 30-day license:
- Applicants must be a graduate from a medical institution in Canada, the United States. Or, the candidate’s medical school had to be included in the list of World Directory of Medical Schools at the time of graduation.
- Candidates must have medicine experience, and be successfully passed exams taken in the Medical Council of Canada during the last 2 years.
- Be currently working at a hospital.
- Have a healthcare worker in Canada who agreed and prepared to be their supervisor.
Like other fields in the country, Canada’s healthcare system also relies on immigrant healthcare professionals. Prior to the global coronavirus pandemic, the Canadian Nurses Association had already informed authorities that the country would face a lack of thousands of nurses until 2022.
Therefore, it seems that the predicted numbers will even rise due to the current crisis. Canada has always approached its immigration strategy as a way to welcome essential healthcare workers to the country for a long time.
By looking at the current events, we may predict that Canada will be more likely to enable foreign doctors to immigrate to the country in order to step in important roles and save more lives.
